J.G. Smith Elementary School Infrastructure Improvements – Chatham County, Georgia
J.W. Oliver Construction partnered with Balfour Beatty on the redevelopment of the new J.G. Smith Elementary School campus in Chatham County. The project involved the demolition of existing site infrastructure and the installation of new underground utility systems, including domestic water, fire water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage. Additional site improvements included roadway base construction, paving, curb and gutter, and the installation of permeable pavers to bolster sustainable stormwater management.
This complex project required thorough coordination to preserve numerous mature oak trees throughout the campus. Using hydroexcavation techniques, crews carefully exposed root systems and installed underground utilities while limiting impacts to the trees, helping ensure their long-term health and preservation. Through innovative construction methods and attention toward environmental stewardship, J.W. Oliver Construction successfully balanced infrastructure improvements with the protection of the site’s natural character.
Scheduled to open in August 2026, the new J.G. Smith Elementary School will provide modern facilities and infrastructure to serve students, faculty, and the Chatham County community for generations to come.
